Eating Healthy: Chinese Take Out
Take out food is such a large part of our culture and Chinese take out is one of the most popular. About once a month my family will order from the Chinese take out restaurant down the street. Every time I look at the menu I'm confronted with pages of tempting options full of fat and grease.
Restraint does not come easy for me when it comes to food and complete elimination of "bad" foods does nothing but backfire so I have an alternative plan: I order one healthy dish and 1 "junky" dish.
The healthy dish should be something "clean" -meaning the sauce (if any) should be optional or come on the side. Having the sauce on the side helps you control the amount of fat and salt you are about to eat. The junk dish should be whatever will satisfy your Chinese food craving, but chose only one (and if it comes in more than one size make it a small size)!
Avoid the "combination" plates because they don't give you as many options of choosing something healthy. I almost always pick steamed veggies (with brown sauce on the side) as my healthy dish but my junk dish varies between ginger & scallion lo mein, scallion pancakes and veggie chow fun.
Remember to eat your healthy dish first so that you fill up with something beneficial instead of junk!
Anahuak Youth Sports Association, The City Project and COFEM use soccer as an organizing tool for students to move more, eat well, stay healthy, do their best in school and in life -- and vote!
(L-R) Anahuak’s Raul Macias, Liliana Guerrero, Public Relations Director, Ciudad de Mexico, Lideres Binacionales, and City Project’s Kristina Harootun.
Diverse allies organized Copa COFEM at Rio de Los Angeles State Park at Taylor Yard October 29-30. The youth soccer tournament promotes fun, physical activity and healthy eating, and and good citizenship. Civic leaders including Raul Macias and Councilman Ed Reyes urged citizens to vote. Health advocates provided educational programs about physical activi and healthy eating. The City Project engaged, educated and empowered the community to support an equity plan to Save California State Parks for All, and to prevent high speed train from destroying state parks. The benefits and burdens of public resources -- including state parks and high speed train -- must be distributed fairly for all.
